I picked up my knitting needles in 2005 (not having done so since about the 1980’s) and started knitting once again. Both my grandmothers were very good knitters, one a hand knitter and the other a machine knitter. This is where my early interest stemmed from. I began knitting up a variety of ‘skinnies’ the all season neckwarmers using different stitches and single yarns, mainly for family, friends and clients. The neckwarmers were an addition to the business (dog walking and wrapping up warm) and I wanted to continue adding to the business in this way. This is when I came up with my very own designs for cat mats and dog rugs, initially for our own pets using several specialist yarns together and then commissions for clients’ pets – tailor made.
I even commissioned a wood carver to make up my very own wooden knitting needles which have been used time and time again and, via the internet I located ‘Felted Knits’ by Beverly Galeskas. I have experimented with the ‘knit to felt’ adapting my own designs i.e. a tea cosy, another possible addition to the business!
